Broke and Blue
- Jazz
Claude Bolling (1930-2020) was a French jazz pianist. Trained initially as a classical pianist, his music is a beautiful blend of the two genres. His First Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano is still extremely popular with musicians and audiences, alike. Broke and Blue play three movements from that suite, as well as his arrangement of Chicago, and his piece California. If you’ve never heard Bolling’s work, now is the time to discover the music of this talented and prolific composer.

Broke and Blue came together when pianist Kathryn Le Gros and flutist Diane Berry first discovered their mutual love of the music of French jazz pianist, Claude Bolling (1930-2020). With two suites for flute and jazz piano, the California Suite, as others, there is a rich choice of wonderful music available to them. Bolling’s fusion of classical and jazz elements makes his work a wonderful vehicle for these two classically trained, versatile musicians. Both are experienced performers, connected to a number of ensembles in Victoria, embracing a number of different genres and styles. In the years since forming Broke and Blue, they have become regular performers on Victoria’s Jazz Vespers circuit, particularly at Church of the Advent in Colwood. For each concert they are joined by a bassist and drummer to bring life to the jazz sound of Bolling.
An accomplished pianist and clarinetist Kathryn Le Gros has enjoyed playing in classical and jazz trios, quartets and quintets, as well as performing with singers and other instrumentalists, since moving to Victoria in the 1990’s.
Flutist Diane Berry is also known as an accomplished composer, teacher and arranger. She was one of the flutes in Two Flutes & a Violin, while she lived in Smithers, and has been active playing with a number of chamber ensembles, musical shows and as a soloist for the Hampton Community Orchestra since moving to Victoria in 2003.
Bassist Ryan Tandy is an in-demand sideman in Victoria, appearing alongside local and touring artists. He’s a member of both the Lust Life Jazz Band and the New Orleans-inspired funk group, The Hi-Fi.
Drummer Bert Hamer has been an avid drummer since childhood, playing in marching bands, rock bands and as a teenager discovered his love of jazz. He played extensively in Ontario, and moved to Victoria in 2019, where he is a member of the Swiftsure Big Band, and sits in with a number of other local musicians.
Augmented Trio Promotions is a new, dynamic partnership created by three talented
musicians in order to promote their musical ensembles on Vancouver Island and throughout British Columbia. Kathryn LeGros, piano, Lisa Tinney, soprano and Diane Berry, flute, represent six different ensembles that play an eclectic mix of music.
