Roger Cole has served as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Oboe for 45 years. Here he joins three VSO colleagues in Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Hall at the VSO School of Music for performances of Mozart’s Quartet in F Major for Oboe and Strings, K. 370, and the Quartet for Oboe and Strings by the English composer Gordon Jacob.

Roger Cole was appointed principal oboist of the Vancouver Symphony by Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama in 1976. At age 22 he was the youngest principal player of the VSO, and today he is the oldest. He was also the principal of the CBC Radio Orchestra (1976-2008) and the Carmel Bach Festival in California (1998-2012). Mr. Cole received his early musical training in Seattle, Washington and went on to become a scholarship student at Yale University and The Juilliard School where he studied with the renowned American oboist, Robert Bloom. Mr. Cole teaches at UBC and the VSO School of Music. In June 2003 Mr. Cole was named Music Director and Senior Orchestra Conductor of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra. Under his guidance the VYSO has flourished and has performed many times alongside the VSO.
Yi Zhou completed her bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and continued her studies n a full scholarship at USC in Los Angeles. After receiving her master’s degree and advanced performance diploma, she performed with LA Opera, San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera and Chamber Orchestra, Pacific Symphony, and Long Beach Symphony. Moving to Vancouver in 2006, Yi became a member of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and CBC Orchestra. In 2009, she joined the first violin section of the VSO. When not performing, Yi Zhou loves teaching, traveling, cooking, and spending time with her family in the beautiful city of Vancouver.
Andrew James Brown is the associate-principal violist of the VSO and was a member of the CBC Radio Orchestra for over eighteen years. An enthusiastic chamber musician, he has worked extensively with Vancouver’s leading musical organizations, including the Vetta Quartet, Curio, the Vancouver New Music Ensemble and Masterpiece Players. Aa a member of Trio Accord, Andrew recorded Bach’s Goldberg-Variations (Skylark Music) along with violinist Mary Sokol Brown and cellist Ariel Barnes. A former member of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Andrew earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at The College Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati.
Born in Vancouver, Charles Inkman is a long-time member of the cello section of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and has played with Joe Trio since 2006. Charles has been the conductor of the North Shore Chamber Orchestra since 2007. He is a graduate of UBC, where he received his Bachelor of Music in Performance under cellist Eric Wilson. Charles conducted the premiere performance of Cameron Wilson’s Salmon Symphony in Smithers, BC. He is on the teaching faculty at the VSO School of Music.
