Founded in 2013 by Carrie Tennant, the Vancouver Youth Choir (VYC) provides a space for promising young singers aged 5- 24 to develop their artistry in a creative and supportive community. In just seven years, the organization has expanded to include over 250 members in six separate ensembles, and has quickly emerged as one of the most highly-regarded youth choirs in the country. VYC has gained international attention for their adventurous “Grimes to Monteverdi” programming, their commitment to performing and promoting music from underrepresented communities, and their outside-the-box approach to shows, where they employ unique venues, multimedia, movement, and staging. In addition to their regularly sold-out season concerts, VYC has been featured multiple times on CBC radio, presented concerts under the baton of Grammy award-winning conductor Charles Bruffy, and was awarded first prize in the youth choir category at the 2017 National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. In 2016, VYC launched the “Vancouver Youth Choir Choral Series” with Cypress Publishing, which has become popular world-wide as a resource for Canadian repertoire for youth choirs. VYC has performed at festivals across France, Italy, and North America and in 2019 was invited to represent Canada at the National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Kansas City.

Carrie Tennant is the founder and artistic director of the Vancouver Youth Choir. For the past 15 years, she has worked primarily with youth, developing leadership and artistry with young singers. Carrie’s choirs have been featured at Chorus America, Podium (Choral Canada), and National ACDA conferences, and have twice been awarded first place in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs. During her time with Coastal Sound, their popular Indiekör shows were recognized with Choral Canada’s “National Award for Innovation”.

Currently, on top of her work with VYC, Carrie is a frequent clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor across Canada and the USA. A passionate community builder, in 2010 Carrie helped found the “BC Choral Mentorship Project”: a collective that brings expert speakers/conductors from around the world together with BC conductors for masterclasses and good food and wine. In a past life (before she had two small and very lovely children) Carrie also toured, performed and recorded with her husband Scott as a member of Vancouver-based indie-pop group, The Salteens.
