A month after we stopped singing in-person last April 2020, some of the singers from BC Girls Choir did not want to stop. We had been working on the Canadian folk group The Wailin’ Jenny’s “One Voice”. Here it is, our very first and ‘folksy’ video.
Singers of the British Columbia Girls Choir. Director: Fiona Blackburn. Pianist: Eric Hominick. (the names of the singers are listed at the end of the video, so no need here)
One Voice, Text & music: Ruth Moody, as sung by the Canadian folk group ‘The Wailin’ Jennys’
The British Columbia Girls Choir offers training from ages six to 18 in four graduated levels. The girls have made appearances with such artists as the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Elektra Women’s Choir, Chor Leoni, The Tenors and opera superstar Ben Heppner. The choir is strongly committed to reaching others in our community with our voices; the girls have raised funds and lent their support to such organizations as the: Downtown Eastside Women’s Shelter; Salvation Army’s Camp Sunrise for youth; St. James Music Academy; Kids Help Phone and many more.
Whenever possible, the choir endeavours to support Canadian choral music. It has been fortunate to perform the works of Canadian composers in Australia, China, America, Costa Rica, and much of Europe. A recent highlight came at the 2018 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, where the girls were awarded the ‘Children’s Choir of the World’ trophy. Again in 2020, the choir won the same honour at the Virtual Llangollen competition.
Sharing the joy of choral music, meeting new friends from around the world, and singing to make a change in the girls’ own communities – this is what BC Girls Choir loves to do. For more information of our history, see https://bcgirlschoir.org/node/34.
